How are you? I have been following your blog pretty regularly these days, and I love reading about all of the things that you like and also your witty commentary! I am writing because I have a question and thought that maybe you would have some insight. I recently got my hair cut and the guy who was doing my hair recommended the Mason Pearson brush for my rather fine, long, highlighted hair. He said that because my hair is thin that any product would weight it down and that a brush that would distribute natural oils would eliminate the need for product. He also said that he thought that it would eliminate frizz. Well this sounds like a miracle brush! The only problem is that its like 150 dollars (what!) although I did find it on ballbeauty for 100 but still that is crazy. I was speaking to Elizabeth and she said that she thought that you had it so I thought I'd ask, is it really a miracle brush? Does it do all of these things, is it worth it for someone who probably should NOT be spending 100 dollars on a hair brush? And is there anything comparable that is less expensive? I would appreciate any advice that you might have. I hope that you are well and enjoying your blizzard today ; )
Love
Maris
Well Maris, as evidenced by the above picture, you can see that under this beach house roof lie quite a few believers in the miraculousness of the Mason Pearson hairbrush. And, yes, they are quite an investment, but they definitely stand the test of time. Annnd...I would still have my very first one dating back from high school if I hadn't been "relieved" of it by someone. Also, a testament to it's fabulousness...people will take them from you...
One way to ensure against Mason Pearson envy? Engraved monogramming or initialing. Equally valuable if your sister looses hers and tries to claim yours as hers...
And, one is never too young to receive their first Mason Pearson. Quite the contrary! They should be considered requisite Christening gifts with pink for preppy lassies...
And, blue for those prepster lads. Sooo, in a nutshell, yes Maris, I believe...
Kindness of my ole gal pal Maris in NYC whom I haven't seen since one très loud night in Buddakan about three summers ago. And, aide-de-camp Lizzie, who just made the move from Boston to Baltimore. Thanks for sending an all important hair brush intervention my way...XXOO
Could not agree more as tot he wiseness of this investment but did not know they were engraveable... where have I been? Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't know they were engraveable! I have three--including one of the white "detangling" models, which T. bought me for my birthday the first year we were dating. I knew then he was a keeper!
ReplyDeleteA "PVE" monogrammed brush shall be added to my wish list.
ReplyDeleteI do have several of the classic black and my wee one has the pink and the blue, but she prefers her conair "square" brush....go figure.

Dear Allie in Gtown,
ReplyDeleteOh wise one, which vendor for best price and engraving? Who knew? I have been slumming with a Kent of England. Time to move up. Thanks for sharing, Denise
I've had to give these up since I started blowing my hair dry. But maybe they make a round brush and I am just in the dark?
ReplyDeleteSomeone recently sent me an email making fun of Mason Pearson and people who would spend $100 on a hairbrush. I honestly informed her that I own three (the original, which is missing a handle from when I playfully threw it at a boy, the replacement, and a travel size). My favorite thing about them is that, like a nice shoe molds to your foot, they mold to your hair. When I use my mom's it feels completely different because the thickness/texture of our hair is different.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I love them, and I would spend the money again. They DO last forever, and you can do sneaky/lazy things like brush your wet hair without tearing it.
I have had my original for years- but have added to it. I have the small for my purse and have given the small M.P. to friends. They are worth their weight and a great investment. Didn't know they were engravable though- thanks for alway being in-the-know!
ReplyDeleteI have several that I bought in London when I lived there many moons ago, so they are tres, tres old and still holding up. And my 13 year old still has her little pink one she got at birth. One time she left it at a slumber party and I was practically screaming "Get that thing back!" (ha ha).. They're classic. I love them. And I had no idea you could engrave them. I learn something new on your blog everyday it seems. :)
ReplyDeleteAgreed! I have 2- One for my home & one for my purse. My daughter who is 5 will only use a MP brush. She says it gets her knots out & keeps her hair smooth. Smooth hair is very important to 5 year olds these days...
ReplyDeleteI must confess, I had NO IDEA about the monogramming option. Now I have a reason to buy a new one! Thanks for this great post!!
I agree, the MP makes all the difference and I too have fine, long hair. Also, would anyone mind sharing how one goes about monogramming a hairbrush - love it!
ReplyDeleteI was just discussing these with my new hairdresser yesterday. Must purchase (alas, I do not yet have one! How is that?) and engrave promptly.
ReplyDeleteMy mother, sister and myself are all firm believers in the MP brushes. My mom recalls the days when they were far less than 100$ and screams at us girls for losing many in the depths of our high school lockers.
ReplyDeleteAllie...that's just crazy as hell to pay that much for a brush. If you tell LFG about these brushes when I send her over for a month, I'll kill you.

I've had two of these brushes in the last 20 years. They last forever and they don't tear your hair. Much better to buy one brush every 10 years than to have to buy 1 or 2 "cheap" brushes every year.
ReplyDeleteMason Pearson is the BEST! I have a big one, but bought the samll pink for my purse too! I know it is meant for children, but it is the perfect size to carry along. I had NO idea you could have them engraved, I must do this to both of mine!
ReplyDeleteI engrave and sell the Mason Pearson Brushes, please feel free to contact me at elainesengraving.com. So much fun to learn about your blog! Thanks, Elaine Townsend
ReplyDeleteClick on the green highlighted "engraved" under the second pic Elaine and you will see that it, indeed, leads to you :)
