It's A Slow Climb 'Round Here

I finally finished Beth Dunn's très funny roman à clé, Social Climbers, and I have my hand shyly raised with a few questions (pauses to flip to pink highlighted sections). Like...

People get their brows dyed? And, there is a facial for your bikini area? And what, pray tell, are the Laura Norman reflexology and Skylar Moriss hypnosis that help with weight loss annnd where do I sign up??? This social climber is apparently cross bred with a smidgie too much country bumpkin...

On the cinema front, I am waiting with bated breath for the new Sofia Coppola movie Somewhere...

Please, please, puhhhleeeze let it make it somewhere within a 20 mile radius of the beach. Us country bumpkins need culture too...

Kindness of Iomoi for the heads up on the Sofia Coppola movie. If I can bribe Babe into going with me, I think there will be enough of a time buffer between this and August's Eat Pray Love for him to recover without me doing penance by way of The A Team or, God help me, Transformers...XXOO

  2. First, I wholeheartedly support facials for the bikini area on a regular basis. Do you need help with this? Second, that SC film looks quite good. Lots of hotel rooms, pools, and drinks. Loved Lost in Translation.

  3. I, too, read this book (and enjoyed it), but was wide-eyed at some of the things in it. Guess I'm a country bumpkin as well. Perhaps Meg Carter could design a badge for those of us who are less than sophisticated.

  4. Darling, even I as a prole, knew about people and the brow dye. 'course that might be a Southern thing too, seems most people down here want to be blonde and dark brows are a dead giveaway that you bought your blonde.

    The others- can't help you...sorry

  5. Haha you are too cute.

And have become one of my extra favorite bloggers because you write at night and are always the most recently published on my list when I set out to read. Loves it.

  7. When you go to see her new movie (which looks fab!) you way want to snuggle in her adorable Mini Blanc de Blancs to share. Fun "champagne" in adorable little pink cans. She even has pink straws included in the packaging. Are you familiar with these?

I'm getting together with "THE" Social Climber on Saturday and cannot wait to meet her!

  8. I too read this book and found it "eye opening" if that's the right way to describe? Haha! I love Beth and love her blog even more! Thanks for the movie tip, it looks fab (new follower by the way! - Haven't had a whole lot of time to add new blogs to my reading list lately, but spent quite a bit of time yesterday and ran across you, loving it!) Happy Friday!

  9. That movie looks great - I just looked and it looks like the release date is December...so you may have to run interference in order to "miss" the A-Team!

  10. I just watched the trailer and still have no idea what the movie is about!

Brow dying is de rigeur when your eyebrows dont match any of the hair on your body. Usually it is done when Miss Clairol pays a visit - a little dip with a q-tip and a swipe across the offending hair and 20 minutes later everything matches!

  11. DH mans up and accompanies me to a number of "chick flics" - his label, not mine, but sometimes he's just not up for it. Then I fall back on my "troops" and leave him home!

I want to see both the SC film and Eat, Pray, Love, but I don't think he'll be up for either of those!

  13. Today is my babe's birthday and I'll bet you my Chanel bag that we see "The A Team". Oh well, can't complain. Bradley Cooper is nice to look at, isn't he?

  14. there is a facial for your bikini area? - Yes! OMG, I'm dying. When I was having my hair, um, enhanced, the other day, I found an article about it in a magazine.

The entire salon collapsed in fits of giggles, so clearly we are (1)bumpkins (2) easily amused and (3) in 3rd grade.

  15. Hello love! yes, dying eyebrows is a must if they don't match your hair or complexion. A bikini facial is done post wax. Cold stones are applied to the area (that is burning from said wax), then a cold mask is applied (to prevent in grown hairs), then you get a foot and leg massage. Pierre and Carlo in Philadelphia used to do mine. Laura Norman and Skyler are in NYC. You are a lovely socialite! xoxo

  17. The movie....not such a film fan. I await your review.

As to the bikini "facial" consider the salient point a *very thorough* extraction. ;-)

  24. Oh my...I've been in surburbia too long. Had not heard about Social Climber, but am mightly curious now! I know of neither "beauty" regimes! :) I'm lucky to get my brow groomed! Not sure if I'll get my guy to see E.P,L, but I may be dragging him to Tilda Swinton's new movie - where I swear she looks like Cate Blanchett!

  27. "Social Climber" by Beth Wilson Dunn is marked as Chippy's favorite book. Eagerly awaiting any future books. Sofia Coppola is one of my all time favorite, the last film I saw was "Marie Antoinette" with Kirsten Dunn, love the scene with Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes" playing in the background.
