Dead End Gene Pool

Oooo do I have a contender cued up to kickoff this summer's beach reads...

Although, I'm not sure Wendy Burden's memoir Dead End Gene Pool will make it 24 hours past it's scheduled delivery next week before being devoured...

With promised tales of her "alcoholic and hilariously self-absorbed mother" who "roamed the world in search of the perfect tan", ahhh...oh wait, momentarily forgot she's the villain...

Wendy outside her beautiful home with her dog Spit and a pair of lions from her great-grandmother's childhood estate. I have become a smidgeon obsessed with her decor...

Wonder if that's the same Farrow and Ball Pink Ground that Celerie Kemble had Plum Sykes paint her West Village living room walls?

And, now not only scheming how to one day convince Babe of pink walls but, also how I can tastefully move my Nana's mink stole from the hanger in the closet to a mannequin on a landing...

Stumped though, about how to duplicate the four generations of riding boots in the front hall...

Unless...

Kindness of MY mother for never telling ME "suck in your stomach or you won't have any friends" or caring that much about her tan...XXOO

  3. Ooooh I don't know how this one slipped past my Wasp Literary Radar but it did. Looks great. Thanks for the heads up!

  4. Oh, do tell us after you take the first dip into that read.
...and on those swell pink shod walls, how about a framed hermes beach towel, "Art" is always a justified purchase. After all (Summer is a verb) must ponder the decor of the pool house in one's own (white) jeans.

  5. DEGP is on my summer reading list...along with about eight others. This was a great article in the NYT. I loved her comment on how she's all over her children after living with {out} her own Mother. I'm paraphasing here, but you get the point.

  9. I have been tracking all of my books on goodreads.com, and this one is going on the "to read list." Sounds Fabulous! And the decor of Wendy Burden's home is so well preserved, I cannot believe the craftsmanship on the fireplace or the wood shingles. Gorgeous!

  10. Dear Allie,
"Four generations of worn flip flops strewn carelessly on the deck." My, my, my, don't it sound gentile! Seriously, the book sounds like a great read and the author's home brings out the voyeur in me. Thanks for sharing, Denise

  11. P.S. I wonder if she's related to Amanda Burden (daughter of Babe Paley & companion of Charlie Rose of PBS)....

  13. Oh, yay! I love your book notices. I am now addicted to the foxhunting books by Rita Mae Brown, I believe I have you to blame. My husband has read two of the books you picked up for Babe, now I have a new one to put on my Amazon list. Keep 'em coming, please and thank you.

  16. Just picked this book up at Barnes & Noble. For the record, my mother still tells me to suck in my stomach, or else....she also was the author of this classic around 1979: "Tan flab looks better than white flab." No wonder I have been bronzing-obsessed all these years...

    XOXO

  20. I think you can replicate Horse Boots with Rainbows. I think it is only appropriate when your home is at the beach, right? Totes appropriate.
