Cooler Envy

Last weekend was Emma's KA Formal in Charleston and tradition holds that the boys pay for everything and the girl's only responsibility, besides looking pretty and preppy, is gifting their dates with custom painted coolers...

When Emma Skyped us with her work in progress my jaw dropped...

Hey, that's MY dream life missy!

I want to go to Formals in Charleston and Savannah...

I want in on the show stopping cooler painting...

I want to be decked in Milly and Lilly and shagging up a storm...

And, while you're at it, I'll also take those private shag lessons down by the lake with Sally Atwater and her Carolina Shag bloodline self...

If the whole "using a friend's father's private jet for Formal" campaign had been a success I don't think I could have contained myself...

In my next life, when I return as Gwyneth Paltrow, I'm packing my Tod's bags and my paints and heading South!

Til then Em Becks...I've got a little Hermes beach towel "painting project" awaiting your arrival home.

Kindness of Adelaide, Emma and Pam for sharing their to die for cooler works of art with me. Sharing? Orrr, taunting? Hmmm...XXOO

  4. VERY cool (no pun intended). Emma is a wonderful artist. I also love patchwork cooler. The art on the lid is terrific. Is Emma the girl in the middle of the photo? She looks lovely.

  5. Oh I am living vicariously through lovely Emma right now! I missed any and all of this growing up on the Range and can't wait to move to CHS. I'll give the men out West this - there's nothing like getting turned about the floor by a cowboy, for sure!

  6. That is so cute...I've not heard of that tradition, although my girls have gone to fraternity formals in Charleston and New Orleans. What a fun idea!

  9. Those are so cool! I am in a sorority but have never been to a fraternity formal (or one of my own) because well engineering doesn't let me get out much. I am jealous that looks like so much fun!

  10. ahh the coolers... they're super fun to make until you've been to more than one formal-- then the paintpenning fumes start to get to you and all the girls go crazy! KIDDING! i have made a few coolers here at wfu, and they make fantastic keepsakes, as long as the boys don't destroy them at punch parties! ;)

  11. I clearly went to the wrong school. The Jolly Trolly is getting very lonely being adorned with just my bumper stickers - albeit from places like "South of the Border" and "The Bitter End"...

  12. This is such a cute tradition. My sister recently went to KA's Old South formal but at Roanoke! xx

  14. THESE COOLERS ARE SO FRATTASTIC! When I was in KD in undergrad our dates were lucky enough if they got their names in sharpie on their cooler! What a fabulous idea! I have to show my friends these, they are on their beach formal right now! These put ours to shame!!! xo

  16. What FUN! The guys must give the girls ample time to paint the coolers...that will stop guys from asking girls at the last minute. I would have loved to paint a cooler during my Roanoke days! xx

  21. Okay, those talented gals surely have a side-business on their hands, there. I can imagine many-a-frat boy wanting a cooler like that! Yeah, I think I'm meant to live in Charleston, too. Or, at least in the South near a beach. Some day. Some day.

  22. What a fun tradition! There's nothing better than a customized "jolly trolley" as my brother dubbed his. Especially one that has a Saints fleur de lis and "Who Dat" emblazoned across the top! Who dat! --BunnyB

  26. I'm so old (or I guess it could be that I went to an all women's college) but I don't recall the painting of coolers back in the day. My Lorelai and her friends sure do have a good time with them though.

  27. Oh man does that bring out the memories!!! Ale was a KA and Mtn. Weekend coolers were the BIG DEAL!!! I skipped trying to be creative and purchased a stainless steal cooler. He must have liked it because he married me!!! Hehe. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Xoxo-BLC

  30. You should ask Emy about this! She is a KA little sister (i.e. is required to be invited to every KA event and sports the much desired rep). She just went to Wake KA's formal!

  31. I went to Old South when I was in college... fun, fun, fun. Two differences from those days in the late 80s/early 90s: We didn't paint coolers, but gave monogrammed flasks as gift to our dates. Also, KAs can't wear the Confederate uniforms to the formals like in the good old days.

    Love living in South Carolina...

  32. Yay for KA & Old South! My brother's Old South was just a few weeks ago - and those are some seriously awesome coolers
