Happy Birthday Nana

This is a post I ran on May 14th of last year. Due to popular demand, and a campaign waged by ADG over at camp Maxminimus, I am re-running it in honor of my Nana...

Since the 14th of May is my late Nana's birthday, I thought I'd share her infamous obituary with you. Written by my mother's brother, my Uncle David, it debuted in Raleigh's News and Observer but soon gained international notoriety.

The News & Observer, Raleigh, NC:
ON JUNE 3, 2005 at 10:45 p.m. in Memphis, Tennessee, Dorothy Gibson Cully, 86, died peacefully, while in the loving care of her two favorite children, Barbara and David. All of her breath leaked out.

The mother of four children, grandmother to 11, great-grandmother to nine, devoted wife for 56 years to the late Ralph Chester Cully and a true friend to many, Dot had been active as a volunteer in the Catholic Church and other community charities for much of the past 25 years.

She was born the second child of six in 1919 as Frances Dorothy Gibson, daughter to Kathleen Heard Gibson and Calvin Hooper Gibson, an inventor best known as the first person since the Middle Ages to calculate the arcane lead-to-gold formula. Unable to actually prove this complex theory scientifically, and frustrated by the cruel conspiracy of the so-called "scientific community" working against his efforts, he ultimately stuck his head in a heated gas oven with a golden delicious apple propped in his mouth. Miraculously, the apple was saved for the evening dessert. Calvin was not.

Native Marylanders and long time Baltimore, Kent Island and Ocean City residents, Ralph and Dot later resided in Lakeland, Florida and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Several years after Ralph's death, Dot moved to Raleigh in 2001, where she lived with her son, David.

At the time of her death, Dot was visiting her daughter, Carol in Memphis. Carol and her husband, Ron, away from home attending a "very important conference" at a posh Florida resort, rushed home 10 days later after learning of the death. Dot's other children, dutifully at their mother's side helping with the normal last minute arrangements - hospice notification, funeral parlor notice, revising the last will, etc. - happily picked up the considerable slack of the absent former heiress.

Dot is warmly remembered as a generous, spiritually strong, resourceful, tolerant and smart woman, who was always ready to help and never judged others or their shortcomings. Dot always found time to knit sweaters, sew quilts and send written notes to the family children, all while working a full time job, volunteering as Girl Scout leader and donating considerable time to local charities and the neighborhood Catholic Church.

Dot graduated from Eastern High School at 15, worked in Baltimore full time from 1934 to 1979, beginning as a factory worker at Cross & Blackwell and retiring after 30 years as property manager and controller for a Baltimore conglomerate, Housing Engineering Company, all while raising four children, two of who are fairly normal.

An Irishwoman proud of and curious about her heritage, she was a voracious reader of historical novels, particularly those about the glories and trials of Ireland. Dot also loved to travel, her favorite destination being Eire's auld sod, where she dreamed of the magic, mystery and legend of the Emerald Isle.

Dot Cully is survived by her sisters, Ginny Torrico in Virginia, Marian Lee in Florida and Eileen Adams in Baltimore; her brother, Russell Gibson of Fallston, Maryland; her children, Barbara Frost of Ocean City, Maryland, Carol Meroney of Memphis, Tennessee, David Cully of Raleigh, North Carolina and Stephen Cully of Baltimore, Maryland.

Contributions to the Wake County (NC) Hospice Services are welcomed. Opinions about the details of this obit are not, since Mom would have liked it this way.

As you may see, I do indeed come by this honestly, for the tongue-in-cheek apple doesn't fall far from the tongue-in-cheek tree...

Tenley D'été

Last summer my CK Bradley Tenley became theee item d'été and I rarely peeled it off my back...

It saw multiple hotel closets...

Gallivanted around NYC...

Celebrated the 4th...

Closed out the summer...

And, wrapped up the post season with a final hurrah in Montauk before heading off for a beverage soaked second life at Furman...

So, when I was having trouble deciding between this year's Tenley offerings, (waxing and waning between the Island Bluebell and the Moroccan Purple, really liking the green best but, knowing it was too much like last years uniform, vetting outside votes for the Island Navy), I picked up my Crackberry and went straight to the big cheese herself; one Camilla "Tenley Makin" Bradley...

"OK. since you wear last years a lot, the island navy is most similar in coloring, but different enough still if you like those colors. i LOVE the island bluebell, and the next option after that would depend if you want more fun, less sophisticated. i am into solid prints these days (shocker) so i would err with the purple moroccan, but you may prefer the island coral....or the island navy." ckb

thanks so much camilla! had just decided on the bluebell so now i feel validated in my choice. moroccan purple was 2nd place. thank you!!! XXOO moi

"ah...great minds. now i want to see pics!" ckb

Ahhh, you want pics? Well, that's all the excuse I need to officially pronounce this "Summer of the Tenley II". Stay tuned for lotsa over wear...

Kindness of Camilla Bradley for taking time out during "selling her tail off" at a Bronxville trunk show to throw me a Tenley lifeline...XXOO Think Babe Would Kill Me If I Got One In Every Color Richardson

PS...Jules Reid will be at Sherman Pickey this Saturday!!!

Her "Fashion is Passion" trunk show will be the place to be from 10am - 6pm so, be there or be square. And very left out...

Tisk Tisk Yourself Funnyman!!!

Last month when I posted this picture, ADG, in true smartypants fashion, left me the comment, "just noticed vertical blinds...tisk tisk..."

Haaahhh...It's a beach house rental Mister Fancy Slippers and, trust me, there are worse decor crimes being committed in this 70's pad than the verticals. But what, may I ask, is your excuse for having a FOOT TATTOO??? Hellooo Belgian wearing pot, meet kettle...

Predictably, yaaawn, taunting followed with pics of Pier One sisal verticals...diagnosis that my "emotional wobbliness", although mostly grief, was laced with "vertical blindness"...and another below the needlepoint belter about how I could have replaced those verticals with the $$$$ I spent at "bikini town"...

Max, Max, Max (I've dropped the "y" outta respect)...maybe ya should spend less time on your "verticals" skit and a smidge more time on replacing those WIRE HANGERS!!!

Yup, it's aaallll fun and games til somebody needs a sponsor cuz their custom Ralph Lauren pants arrive and they realize they may end up on A&E's Intervention. Don't look at me bub, I've vowed to go cold turkey after my Pucci spree...

And, if you do end up on the 5th floor at Sibley, for goodness sake don't mention that I helped you find the sold out Lilly Daiquiri Pink Ten Ton shorts! Your "fourth cousin in consuming" AllieVonSpendaGrand does not, I repeat, DOES NOT have a problem. I just shop socially...

Kindness of Maxminimus for giving me more fodder than I could ever possibly use. Fortunately, I'm a master story weaver as well as world class consumer. Now, excuse me while I go get under my "rental house viscose-dacron comforter" and go to sleep...XXOO

Furminator Breach Of Contract

This unseasonably hot weather has been exhausting for lil Pilgie who was still sporting his handsome winter coat...

His good looks may have helped land him his "face of FURminator" gig but, they were starting to cramp his cusp of summer style...

We'll have to read the fine print to see if his new "lion cut" doo is a breech of his modeling contract...

Maybe it'll end up being a career making move like when Linda Evangelista cut off all her hair...

Or, he can become a swimsuit model in Iceland posing in bikinis and knee high fluffy white fur boots...

The downside of his new svelte look? Being hounded by the Paparazzi...

The upside? Access to new and exciting places...

That you maybe couldn't get into before. Ahhh, the pitfalls and perks of celebrity...

Kindness of Ellen Garrity for encouraging Pilgie to enter the world of modeling. If FURminator doesn't tear up our contract Ellen we promise to send a finder's fee. Do you like your Greenies in single or three packs? XXOO

Mother And Maybe Daughter's Day

A couple of months ago Summer in Newport mentioned the beautifully illustrated book Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad and I immediately made two mental notes...

One, throw a copy into my virtual shopping cart for moi...

And two, add one for my mother-in-law Lillie for Mother's Day...

Now, my mom has been dying to see The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo so, my Mother's Day plan for her included an afternoon of popcorn and film for us her. Whatever possessed me to think our dated theater at the beach, where you can see still The Blind Side annnd gum under the seat from 1980, would be showing a foreign movie with subtitles can be chalked up to a momentary delusion of locale grandeur...

Plan B, the Escali Primo Digital kitchen scale, was put into play. Now my Mom can make the Goat Cheese Cheesecake recipe with the wierd measurements. The fact that I would potentially benefit from this gift as well was realized after the fact. Cross my heart...

Kindness of my Mom and Lillie for being great mothers to Josh and I both. These small gifts hardly represent our gratitude and love...XXOO

Hold Onto Your Wallet Daddy

Daddy again Skip Brooks at Alex Grant is running a series asking some of us female bloggers to pick an outfit for his so scrumptious you could eat her with a spoon daughter Avery. Well, hold on to your wallet Daddy and welcome to Babe's world...

It's never to early for a girl to learn early that, even though only she knows it's there (til marriage promise!), nice underwear makes you feel special. And, if you can find the Skivvydoodles panties with the days of the week, even better...

I suggest Lilly right outta the gate, natch...

And, a Papo de Anjo cardi for those cool summer evenings and church. Avery should work on her around the neck sweater tying skill set well before those tiresome laces enter the picture...

First come Marie Chantel gold gladiator sandals then comes Louboutins...

Like Mother like daughter with the child's Van Cleef and Arpels Sweet Alhambra mother-of-pearl and gold bracelet. But, Mummy first please...

This child's Nantucket basket purse will be certain to become an heirloom...

And, will be a perf stand in til Daddy springs for the real thing at an appropriate age..

You're in luck cuz Melissa Odabash makes teenie weenie cutesy bikinis for your beach baby...

And, back to Papo de Anjo for a swanky tunic coverup cuz modesty at the proper times is most little ladylike...

We want to make sure your darling's good taste is subliminally ingrained from a young age so make sure her surroundings are beautiful...

And, instill culture whenever possible...

Lastly, speak to her now of Paris and promise her that one day you will take her there for a father daughter weekend. Because, according to Gwynnie, the first time she sees Paris should be with her Daddy, a man that will love her forever...

Kindness of Skip at Alex Grant for inviting me to contribute. Babe is available for sympathy and a "better you than me" pat on the back. And, I'm available for shopping play dates...XXOO

Work Wardrobe

Now, before you hasten to judgement, let me just say in my defense that beginning in a few weeks I'm pretty much in a bikini from sun up til sundown. So, it's only practical that I build a excessive modest wardrobe of swimwear to get me through the summer...

Of course, we have theee white contender sure to get so much wear that it'll be forced into an early August retirement...

And the "once I see results from my grueling P90Xhaustive workouts and not a moment before" teenie weenie number...

I had this in white last year and wore it into the ground so, this year I'm test driving it in black which is sure to look smashing against the background of an Hermes beach towel, if one should land on my lap...

And, the pièces de résistance, are the two Pucci numbers I snagged during the unsupervised portion of my NYC trip...

But, once I sashay out on to the beach in this...

...or this all bronzed, blonde and lubed up in Bain De Soleil gelee, Babe will likely be past any protesting. That 'tis my plan I'm I'm holding to it...

And, just in case I find myself in need of another bikini before summer's out, I have this skimpster cued up in my virtual shopping basket ready to be called into the game at a moments notice...

Kindness of Babe who will hopefully, before choking on his Morning Dew, take under consideration the fact that I am promising to hang up my shopping spurs for a couple of months. Gifts, however, are always welcome...XXOO
